2024年もあっとという間に半年が飛び去ってしまい、後半に突入してしまいました。
このところ、かなり蒸し暑い日々が続いていますが、その暑さに負けることなく乗り切っていかなければと思っています。
ある調査で、米海軍のカラースライド資料を見ることになったことがきっかけで、あらためて第2次世界大戦中のものをご紹介したいと思いました。米海軍のカラースライド資料は、RG80GK（Color Photographs of US Navy Activities 1939-1958 Reference/Reproduction Slides） というものになります。これらのカラースライドを見るためには、まず、RG80GKC（General Records of the Department of the Navy-Visual Aid Subject Index to Color Photographs of the Navy Activities WWII） というカラースライドの画面を白黒写真にしてその横にキャプションをつけた小さな目録カード資料を見るところから始まります。
左下の写真は、そのRG80GKCのファインディングエイドのフォルダーです。中身は、Box 1：Aircrafts （海軍航空機）からBox 14：Weapons（武器関係）までの簡単なトピックが書かれているだけのものですが、それらの中からBox 4-5のWWII （第2次世界大戦）を選び、それらの箱を出してみたときのものが右下の写真になります。

以下の写真は、その箱の中の様子と、目録カードです。この写真は、1942年にルーズベルト大統領夫妻が、ワシントンDCの米海軍海軍工廠（ワシントン・ネイビー・ヤード）に来た時のもので、詳細はあらためてそのカラースライド写真とともに述べます。

上の写真のキャプションには、1942年から1944年とありますが、これはルーズベルト大統領が、ワシントンDCの米海軍工廠（ネイビーヤード）で1942年9月16日、ナチス・ドイツと戦っているノルウェーを称賛し、米国の艦船を、ノルウェーに渡すというセレモニーを行ったときのものです。その時に、彼は、「ノルウェーを見よ（Look to Norway）」という演説を行いました。ルーズベルト大統領は車の後部座席から演説をして、エレノア大統領夫人は、白の帽子とドレスを着て、その車の後ろに立っています。その周りにはシークレットサービスとしての護衛の人々が立っています。

上の写真は、真珠湾攻撃から3か月ほど経った時期だと思いますが、その攻撃で犠牲となった米兵たちの墓に、ハワイの伝統として、レイを飾っています。おそらくその日は、メモリアルデーであったと考えられます。レイはお祝い事だけではなく、こうした故人への祈りをささげる意味でも使われていたことをあらためて知りました。

上の写真は、1944年の頃の、ソロモン諸島の中のツラギ島の海岸の旧日本海軍の駆逐艦の菊月です。この菊月は、1942年5月4日に、米海軍空母のヨークタウン（USS Yorktown、CV-5）によって攻撃され、沈没しました。が、その後米海軍設営隊第34大隊によって海岸線まで引き揚げられました。しばらく水中にあったせいで、船の表面の色が変わってしまっていたことがわかります。

上の写真は、米海軍軽空母モントレーの甲板で日向ぼっこをしている海軍兵達です。横になっている兵士もいますが、ほとんどが膝を抱えるようにして座っています。体を伸ばすスペースが限られていたかもと思いつつ、こうした姿は、兵士達の年齢の若さを語っているようにも思えました。この写真は、彼らを見下ろす形で撮影したかと思いますが、兵士達の両腕が円を作り、その円の形が鎖のようにも見えてなんだかとても不思議な印象です。この軽空母がギルバート諸島に到着したのは1943年の11月半ばでしたので、そこでの戦闘を前につかの間の、かつ、貴重な日向ぼっこの時間であったかと思います。

上の写真は、米国海軍空母ヨークタウン（USS Yorktown, CV-10）の甲板上に並ぶ、グラマン F6F ヘルキャット（Grumman F6F Hellcat）という艦上戦闘機、TBF アヴェンジャー（Grumman TBF Avenger ）という主力雷撃機、そしてダグラスSBD ドーントレス（Douglas SBD Dauntless ）という偵察及び爆撃機の様子です。1943年11月から1944年2月まで行われたギルバート・マーシャル諸島の戦い（Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign ）の前半の時期のものです。この空母の搭載機は90機もありました。翼をたたんでいるときは、蜂がじっとしているようにも見えますが、なんとも不気味な感じもします。こうした飛行機が、1945年には日本本土や沖縄を攻撃し、また特攻機との空中戦も展開していくことになりました。

上の写真は、1943年11月にギルバート諸島の中のマキン島に上陸した直後に捕らえられた日本軍兵士と思われる3人の男性たちの様子です。このマキン島の戦いでは、日本軍兵士はほとんど戦死となったかと思いますので、これらの3名は、コリアンまたは先住民族の軍属メンバーであったかもしれません。いずれ、あらためてこのマキン島の戦闘記録を調べたいと思いました。
下の2枚の写真は、沖縄戦下の、米軍側領域の中にいた子ども達が遊んでいる様子と、日本の敗戦直後の九州の古江港（おそらく長崎県平戸市内）の様子です。こうした写真も貴重なものだと思います。

最後の上の写真は、1945年8月30日の、横須賀の日本海軍基地での降参式に参加した旧日本海軍の兵士や将校たちの様子です。この日、米海軍関係者や米海兵隊第6師団及びイギリス海兵隊が、横須賀の日本海軍基地にやってきました。横須賀の、当時の横須賀海軍基地長官であった戸塚道太郎（1890-1966）と米海軍第31タスクフォース司令官のオスカー・チャールズ・バッジャー(Oscar Charles Bager: 1860-1958) との間で、進駐の事務手続きが行われました。関連して、米国国立公文書館のサイトから、この時の7分弱の動画も見つけましたのでご覧いただけたらと思います。この写真に関連した場面は3分30秒くらいから始まります。U.S. MARINES LAND AT YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE: RG428-NPC-14530: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/79786
もう20年近くもの間、米国国立公文書館でいろいろな資料調査を進めてきましたが、それぞれの調査を行う度に、まだ見たことがない資料がいろいろな媒体で存在していることを実感します。この公文書館にある資料のすべてに目を通すことは不可能なことですが、それでも今後もささやかながらもご紹介をしていければと思っています。（YNM）
