ある調査の関係で、戦後まもなくの九州関係の写真を追っていたときに、子ども達にカメラを向けたときの写真とそのキャプションが目に留まりました。子ども達がとても頼もしく見えて、面白い写真だと思いましたので、今回は、そうした写真のいくつかをご紹介したいと思います。

左上の写真の、5歳の男の子が、米軍海兵隊兵士を見ても恐れることなく、ポケットに手を突っ込んでカメラに向かって微笑んでいる姿はなんとも堂々としたもので、海兵隊兵士もちょっと驚いていたようです。右上の写真は、人形を背中におぶっている姉をまねて幼い弟も人形を背中におぶっている姿は、米国の人形の遊び方とかなり異なるとキャプションに書かれていますが、こうしたコメントも日米の文化の差が出ていてとても面白いと思いました。

日本関係の写真の中には、母親が子どもをおんぶしていたり、抱っこをしていたりする写真はたくさんありますが、父親が子どもを抱いている写真というものはこれまで見たことがありませんでした。子どもも父親も笑っている姿は、戦争がようやく本当に終わったのだという安堵感に満ちているようです。

左上の写真は、海兵隊兵士が、日本の子ども達に戦争は終わったから爆弾が落ちてくることはないとお話している様子です。キャプションでは、「子どもたちは戦争が終わったことを理解していないようだが、」とありますが、子ども達の笑顔を見る限り、笑顔で空を飛ぶ米軍機を見上げているので、そのことは理解をしているようにも思えます。右上の写真は、戦争中は着物を着てゆっくり正月を祝うようなことはできなかったので、ようやく戦争が終わって、正月を祝うことができることをとても喜んでいるような子ども達の笑顔が見えます。

戦争中の爆撃で各地の学校が焼けてしまったことも多々ありました。左上の写真は、青空教室の様子です。教えようとする教員も、学ぼうとする生徒たちも、新たな社会のために、一生懸命であったと思います。右上の写真は、フォークダンスを教える先生とそれを習う生徒たちです。フォークダンスは、戦後の占領期の進駐軍による民間教育の一環とも言われています。この時期に紹介されたフォークダンスは、広く広まり、1960年代に生まれた私も、小学校でのフォークダンスはとても楽しいもので大好きな時間でした。

上記の写真は、学校の運動場で、一見行進とも思えますが、ゲームをしている様子、また野球とサッカーを合わせた面白そうなゲームをしている様子、そして学校の庭造りをしようとしている子ども達の様子で、戦後まもなくの生活は大変であったと察するのですが、これらの写真の子ども達は、新たな時代を担う人間として力強く生きていたのではないかと思います。（ＹＮＭ）
