皆さんは、下記のポスターを見たことがありますか。これは、第1次世界大戦中に作成されたものです。数年前に、ある資料調査で、ペンシルバニア州の カーライル（Carlisle）にある米国陸軍の歴史研究施設である、米国陸軍遺産教育センター（U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center：USAHEC）に行きました。その日の調査を終えて、館内の博物館の展示を見て米陸軍の歴史を学び、その展示の出口にあった土産店も見て回りました。その時に、このポスターも売られているのが、目に留まり、早速買ってしまいました。このポスターの絵の様子から、第1次世界大戦中のものであることはすぐわかりましたが、「戦場に赴く、または戦場にいる兵士」と 「たくさんの本」とが結ぶつくイメージは、当時の私の頭の中にはなかったので、その意外性がとても印象的でした。しかしながら、実は、戦争の時代と図書は、密接な関わりがありました。今回は、第1次世界大戦の時代に焦点を当てて、関連する写真資料をご紹介したいと思います。

米国図書館協会（American Library Association：ALA）は、図書館と図書館教育を国際的に振興する組織であり、1876年に設立されて以来、世界で最も古くかつ最大の図書館協会であり、現在も図書館教育や図書館サービスの向上などを推進しています。
1914年、ドイツやオーストリアを中心とした同盟国側と、イギリスやフランス及びロシアの連合国（協商国）側で始まった第1次世界大戦に対し、米国は1917年4月に参戦することになりました。当時の米国図書館協会（American Library Association：ALA）は、図書館戦争サービス（Library War Service）という部署を設立し、国内及び国外にいる兵士の訓練場であるキャンプ、兵士の病院などを含めて500か所以上の場所に、約700万から1000万冊の本や雑誌を提供し、戦争遂行のキャンペーンを大々的に担いました。（参照：American Library Association：ALA History: https://www.ala.org/aboutala/1917）

上記の2枚の写真は、アメリカ図書館協会による、兵士のための本の寄付に呼びかけの様子と、その呼びかけに対して、町の人々が自宅から本をたくさん持ち寄って寄付をしようとしている姿です。その背景には、おなじみのポスターが掲げられていることがわかります。
下記の写真は、集まった本の整理をしているところ、集められた本を海外へ送る準備をしているところ、そしてそれらの本を戦地の基地周辺で兵士たちが読んでいるところです。

米軍内部の人種隔離政策の撤廃が実現したのは、第2次世界大戦を経た後の1948年のトルーマン大統領による、大統領行政命令9981が出された時からになります。その後の朝鮮戦争では、米軍部隊のすべては人種統合がされることになりました。第一次世界大戦時では、残念ながら米軍内部においては、そうした人種隔離がまだ行われていました。しかしながら、全米図書館協会のキャンペーンは、人種や地域の違いを超えて浸透していました。

この米国図書館協会（American Library Association：ALA）の、図書館戦争サービス（Library War Service）による大きな活動によって、米国内の各地域の米軍基地及び関連機関や施設においても、図書館がどんどん整備されていきました。下記の写真は、米国内の米軍基地内に建設された図書館の外観と内観の例です。
