今年2022年は、戦後から77年目を迎えます。今は新型コロナウイルス感染症 (COVID-19)の問題で日常生活の維持もままならないほどですが、こうした未曽有の現在の状況も、形はもちろん異なっても、非日常的な毎日に必死に対応しなければならないというところでは、戦争の時代と重なるところがあるのではないかと感じています。
1941年の12月に太平洋戦争が勃発し、翌年の1942年の春以降、当時米国に住んでいた多くの日本人や日系米国人のうちの約12万人が戦争が終結するまで、アイダホ州、アリゾナ州、アーカンソー州、カリフォルニア州、コロラド州、テキサス州、ユタ州、そしてワイオミング州の合計8州 (ハワイを除く)において、全11カ所にわたって設置された日系人収容所に強制的に収容されることになりました。（参照：日系アメリカ人強制収容所の概要：全米日系人博物館：http://www.janm.org/jpn/nrc_jp/accmass_jp.html）
今回はそうした収容所で生活を余儀なくされた人々のうち、特に子ども達の様子に関する写真をご紹介したいと思います。

上記の左の写真は、当時、住んでいた場所から日系人収容所に向かうバスを待っているときの少女の写真です。2019年10月4日付けの弊社のFB記事上でも紹介させていただきました。リンゴをかじりながらも不安げな表情が、当時の日系人全体の心情を表しているようです。この写真は、米国国立公文書館の5階の写真リサーチルームの壁にも飾られている写真の1枚でもあり、おかっぱの髪型とその雰囲気は、私の娘の小さい頃を彷彿させるので、以前からとても気になっていました。右の写真の少女はおそらく小学校1-2年生くらでしょうか、彼女なりにいろいろな不安があったと思うのですが、カメラに向かって微笑んでいます。
こうした子ども達を含めたくさんの日系人が、バスや列車に乗って、まずは14カ所の集合センターに収容され、そこから11カ所の収容所へと連れていかれることになりました。移民として必死に米国で働き積み上げてきた財産や土地を取り上げられることになり、ほとんど着の身着のままの状態で、砂漠のような場所に作られたバラックのような収容所に強制的に連れてこられた人々の屈辱と怒りと絶望はどんなに大きなものであったかと考えると本当に胸が痛みます。下記の写真はそうした収容所の様子です。

そうした厳しい状況の中でも、現実を受け入れて、日系人の人々は収容所周辺に新しく水を引いて農地を開墾して野菜を育てたり、庭園を作ったり、家具を作ったりするなど、主体的に生活を切り開こうとしました。（参照：語り継がれる、戦時中の収容所での暮らし～アイリーン・マノさん：North American Post, 6/11/2018: https://www.napost.com/ja/the-story-of-life-in-japanese-american-concentration-camp/）
下記の6枚の写真は、収容所での子ども達の様子です。これまで慣れ親しんできた自宅から、遠く離れて、プライバシーもなく、米兵の見張りもいるような収容所では、子どもながらにいろいろな不安や不満、そして怖さもあったかと思います。しかしながら、それでも無邪気に見せる子ども達の笑顔は、親を含むすべての大人達にとってもかけがえのないものであったと思います。

苦境にあっても、こうした子ども達の笑顔は周囲の人々を励ますことにもなったのではないかを思います。こうした子ども達のためにも、今は、現状を乗り切り、いつかはこの戦争は必ず終わるのだという思いと希望を大人たちも持ち続けることにもつながっていったかと思います。
米国における日本人または日系人の歴史は、19世紀後半から始まりましたが、それは偏見や差別との闘いの歴史でもありました。特に1941年12月の真珠湾攻撃の後は、米国内の日系社会への非難が強まり、約12万人もの日本人または日系人が強制的に収容所に収容されました。戦後もいろいろな苦闘を強いられてきました。
そうした米国における日本人や日系人の歴史を私達もしっかり学んでいかなければと思っています。
