アメリカ同時多発テロ事件

2001年9月11日の朝、米国ニューヨーク、マンハッタンにあったワールドトレードセンターにハイジャックされた旅客機が衝突しました。当時、日本でテレビ番組を見ていた私は、次の瞬間、民放全てのチャンネルが次々と、まるで映画のワンシーンを映し出しているかのような光景の画面に変わっている事に気づいたのを今でも鮮明に覚えています。その映像はワールドトレードセンター・ツインタワーの北棟に旅客機が衝突した事によって、そこから黒煙が上がっている様子でした。この映像に世界中の人々の目が釘付けになっていた時、2機目の旅客機がワールドトレードセンター・ツインタワーの南棟に衝突し炎上しました。この時点でアメリカ国民の大半、少なくともアメリカ政府はテロ攻撃だと理解をしたといわれています。

標的となったのはワールドトレードセンター・ツインタワーの他にも米国国防総省本庁舎（ペンタゴン）ですが、これら以外にも、もう１機、ハイジャックに成功しワシントンD.C.へ向かっていた旅客機もありますが、成功したのはハイジャックまでで乗客・搭乗員がテロ攻撃を阻止した事で失敗へと終わっています。このUnited 93（またはFlight93）の物語もテロ攻撃後からとても広く知られています。

They depict the movements and timeline of events related to the four planes hijacked by terrorists on the morning of September 11, 2001, as well as the U.S. Air Force fighters that were scrambled to intercept them.

米国国立公文書館にはこの事件に関連する膨大な量の資料が保管されています。その一部はセキュリティー上、いまだ見る事ができないものもあるという事です。このブログでは被害にあったワールドトレードセンターと米国国防総省本庁舎（ペンタゴン）の被害状況から復興へと向かった現場を記録した写真をいくつか紹介します。

テロ攻撃の後はもちろんですが、ワールドトレードセンターの事件現場では数か月間煙が止まらず、煙の臭いが何マイルも先まで漂っていたそうです。実際に現場では事件から100日後の12月20日に最後の消化活動が終わり、それまでは現場の何処かで火が再燃する状況であったそうです。以下の写真は事件から3日経ったニューヨークのワールドトレードセンターの写真と米国国防総省本庁舎（ペンタゴン）の事件当日の夜の写真です。どちらの現場でもかなりの量の煙が出ている事が一目瞭然です。

ニューヨークのワールドトレードセンターには全米から沢山の消防士、軍人そしてボランティアの人々が救命や復興工事の為に訪れます。その数は180万人と言われていますが、それでも崩れ落ちたビルの瓦礫の山を綺麗にする作業だけで9か月を要したそうです。

時間はかかりましたが、悲劇的なイベントを乗り越えて、ニューヨークや米国国防総省本庁舎（ペンタゴン）は復興に向けて動き出します。ワールドトレードセンターは当初から事件が起きた日から10年目の節目を目指し2011年の9月11日までに復興工事を終わらせる事を目標に公式に2003年に復興工事を始めました。金銭的な問題や法的な問題など様々な問題を抱えながらも、新しいビルのデザインが決まった2006年には追悼博物館の一部となるビルを建設し始め、2014年の5月21日から追悼博物館が一般に公開され始めました。しかし、ワールドトレードセンターのタワーは事件前の2つよりも5つ増やし、7つのタワーが建設される事が決まっていますので、2020年現在も工事中との事です。一方、米国国防総省本庁舎（ペンタゴン）は事件から1か月後に復興工事へと取り掛かり、目標であった1年以内の終了通りに工事が終わっています。2003年には被害を受けた箇所の新しいデザインが決まり、追悼博物館として一般に公開され始めたのは2008年の９月11日です。

アメリカ同時多発テロ事件から今年で20年が経ちます。時間が経過するにつれて、20年前の記憶や衝撃は人々の中で当時よりも薄れていっているのではないかと感じますが、ニューヨークのワールドートレードセンター跡地には犠牲者を追悼するための博物館ができ、米国国防総省本庁舎（ペンタゴン）にも同様に犠牲者を追悼する駐車場を設け、同時多発テロの資料を閲覧できる資料館もできました。ペンシルベニアにもハイジャックされた４機の旅客機の中で唯一目的地まで辿り着かず墜落した旅客機United93に搭乗していた犠牲者を追悼するための博物館もできました。そして米国国立公文書館等の資料館でも次の時代へこの歴史的な事件を伝える事はもちろん、他国からのテロ攻撃がどのようなものであったかを学ぶ為に膨大な資料を保管してあります。約3000人もの命を奪った歴史的なテロ事件で亡くなられた方々のご冥福を深くお祈りすると同時に、これらの資料が平和な世界を導く架け橋のような存在になるようにと願います。（MJ）
